Physicians and surgeons available in the Lake Area include those specializing in adolescent and young adult medicine, allergy, anesthesiology, bariatric, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, dermatolory, family practice, gastroenterology, general practice, gynecology, obstetrics, hematology, hypertension, internal medicine, nephrology, neurology, occupational medicine, opthalmology, orthopedics, ear-nose-throat, pathology, pediatrics, physical rehabilitation, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, psychiatry, pulmonary, radiology, rheumatology, sports medicine, urology, and surgery - cardiovascular, general, hand, neurological, opthalmologic, orthopedic, thoracic, and vascular.

The American Dental Association lists 34 members on its dental staff.  The areas of dentistry covered are general dentists, endodontists, oral & maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and periodontists.  The yellow pages in the phone book list over 85 dental practice entries.

Christus St. Patrick Hospital is a regional hospital treating people from all parts of southwestern Louisiana.  In 1908 the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word began operating

St. Patrick’s, which was a 50-bed facility at that time.  Lake Charles’ St. Patrick’s is one of 14 health care centers in the United States that are owned and operated by the Sisters of Charity of Houston, TX.  Now, more than 80 years later, there are 298 beds and St. Patrick’s is the designated cardiac care facility and cancer management center for Southwest Louisiana.  Besides basic general medicine, St. Patrick’s Special Services include cardiovascular surgery, kidney dialysis, critical (intensive) care units, pathological department, 24-hour emergency treatment, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatric treatment, respiratory therapy, gynecology, radiology, and physical therapy.  There is also a comprehensive care unit that provides alcohol and related substance abuse programs.

In St. Patrick’s pursuit for maintaining their top-notch staff, they have developed a comprehensive nursing program in affiliation with McNeese State University.  After two years of classes, medical and radiological technology students complete their four-year degree program at St. Patrick’s.  Present employees may also further their technical, professional, or formal education by participating in the hospital’s Education Assistance Program, a financial aid service.

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is right in the center of the city. It is one of

Southwestern Louisiana’s largest hospitals with a bed capacity of 324 and special coronary and medical intensive care units with comprehensive care for all medical services except for heart transplants and major burns.

The services offered by Memorial now include intensive care coronary units, pediatrics and neo-natal intensive care units, mammography, ultrasound diagnosis, pulmonary medicine, radiation oncology, chemical dependency, respiratory therapy, community blood bank, and one-day outpatient surgery. Level Four trauma treatment is available in the emergency center, as well as help for the treatment of poisoning cases.

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is one of seven designated receiving hospitals for military aid and safety and traffic helicopters. It is also the heliport for offshore injuries in remote areas in the Gulf of Mexico. 

WEST CALCASIEU CAMERON HOSPITAL, Cypress Street, Sulphur, LA,

West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (West Cal-Cam) serves the area west of the Calcasieu River, including certain areas in Calcasieu Parish and part of Cameron Parish with complete medical services including emergency, surgical and critical care with a 109-bed capacity.

In August 1953, West Cal-Cam opened, and its growth has not subsided.  Services include chemical dependency, childbirth education and birth facilities, ambulance, home health agency, patient education, a child development center, a work hardening center, a new cardiology unit and dietary programs (Nutritional Services).

In addition, there is a Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, a Transitional Care Unit, a Wellness Center (Dynamic Dimensions Health and Fitness Center with locations in both Sulphur and Moss Bluff) and a Therapeutic Riding Center.

Of particular interest to working parents is the seven-day-a-week, twenty-four-hour-a-day, sick children service with supervised medical attention, “Best Medicine for Children,” for children from three months to twelve years of age.

Women & Children’s Hospital opened in 1984 as a specialty hospital for women.  The hospital expanded into an acute care hospital in order to provide personalized, quality healthcare for the entire family with an 80-bed capacity.  Outpatient services are available for men, but men cannot be admitted.  Along with the medical/surgical capabilities, the hospital continues to offer distinctive expertise in services for women, newborns, and pediatrics.  Some of these services include advanced gynecological surgery, the G.I.F.T. procedure for infertility, perinatology and neonatology services and a neonatal intensive care unit.  Special programs offered by the hospital include the Cradle Club, Physician Information Service and the National Association of Senior Friends.

The modern physical plant of the Lake Area Medical Center boasts warmly decorated private and semi-private rooms that accommodate 80 patients.  The friendly setting combined with a qualified, caring and professional staff helps patients feel comfortable during their hospital stay. 
 

LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL GAUTHIER CAMPUS, 1900 Gauthier Rd., Lake Charles, LA, (337) 480-7000 

The Gauthier campus opened their doors in January of 2003.  The new 87,000 square foot facility is situated on 59 acres on the corner of Gauthier and Nelson Roads.  The hospital includes a 24 bed Family Birth Center, 14 bed Women’s Specialty Unit, 23-bed Special Care Nursery (NICU), Baby Lounge, Early Labor Evaluation Center, Surgery Suites, Education Conference Center, Coffee Shop, Gift Shop, Pre-admission center, Pastoral Care, Radiology and Laboratory Services, Medical Records, Bereavement Team and Financial Counselors.  The opening was highly anticipated by the community, as well as hospital officials and physicians.  The Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Oak Park Campus mother/baby, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and women’s gynecological surgery services was all relocated to the Gauthier Campus.

In 1997, a new 12,600 square foot Surgicare facility opened.  Surgicare specializes in same- day surgery ranging from general plastic, dental, podiatry, eye, ear, nose and throat, urology, gynecology and orthopedic surgery.  The facility offers five fully equipped OR suites and two treatment rooms.

Opened in February of 2001, this clinic provides free ambulatory medical care and pharmaceuticals to the uninsured.  The clinic is opened every Thursday evening and offers laboratory testing, medications, x-ray procedures, mammogram screening, nutrition counseling, and ultrasound procedures.
